A Decade of Healthier Oil at abc Country

We all love the great tastes that can be created when food is deep fried. What is even better in our increasingly health-conscious society is knowing that the frying oil is heart healthy.

Ten years ago, abc Country Restaurants decided to take a healthier deep-frying road, partnered with manufacturer Richardson International Limited of Winnipeg, and began using Canola Harvest HiLo for all of its fried menu items. Canola Harvest HiLo is an Omega-9 Canola Oil, uniquely high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, with zero trans fat and the lowest amount of saturated fat among other commonly used frying oils.

“We knew consumers were continuing to seek healthier options and restaurants needed a solution,” said John Haen, Vice-President, Nutrition Division — Richardson International Limited. “The development of Canola Harvest HiLo was ground breaking from both a health and operational perspective — a cooking oil that was not only healthier, but also made economic and operational sense for the restaurant and hospitality industry.”

abc Country was first to make the change. Subsequently Earls and Kelly O’Bryan’s switched to this healthier choice, and the rest of the restaurant industry soon followed, removing nearly 400 million kilograms of bad fats in the past decade.

Omega-9 Canola Oil is made from naturally bred canola seeds developed by Dow AgroSciences. These next generation cooking oils are being widely adopted across North America — delivering neutral taste and improved health and performance attributes.
